Today, in LJ news of the amusing.

In news that I swear I am not making up, jwz had found a story in Wired about a game called "Infidel Online":

Tech-savvy militants from al Qaida and other groups have modified video war games so that U.S. troops play the role of bad guys in running gunfights against heavily armed Islamic heroes, a Defense Department official and contractors told Congress.

Battlefield 2 ordinarily shows U.S. troops engaging forces from China or a united Middle East coalition. But in a modified video trailer posted on Islamic websites and shown to lawmakers, the game depicts a man in Arab headdress carrying an automatic weapon into combat with U.S. invaders.

"I was just a boy when the infidels came to my village in Blackhawk helicopters," a narrator's voice said as the screen flashed between images of street-level gunfights, explosions and helicopter assaults.,70822-0.html

jwz says: "I understand that the traditional response here would be lol pwn3d!!1"

(Yes, that "blackhawk helicopters" quote is apparently from exactly where you think it is. Shades of Evil Bert!)

bruce_schneier informs us that there's a nerdcore rapper who has named himself (wait for it, wait for it...) "MC Plus+". You knew it was only a matter of time before the greatness of MC Frontalot and MC Hawking spawned imitators! You can listen to MC Plus+'s throw-down on the subject of encryption - appropriately titled "Alice and Bob" - which mentions DES, AES, Blowfish, RSA and SHA-1 here. (Perhaps this unexpected development will help revitalize the US's eroding Techno-Industrial base.)

Lastly, also courtesy of jwz, we have a video adaptation of the sci-fi short story They're Made Of Meat. I recommend reading the short story first, since I think they missed a couple of the best things in the video (spoilers). But it's still worth watching.
