1. Get on the radio, and tell whoever's listening that you are landing a 747.

1. Engage a single channel of the autopilot — light one of the buttons labeled "CMD." Point the heading indicator in the direction indicated to keep the plane straight and level.

3. Find the checklists in the side pocket of the pilot's and copilot's seat. If the plane is a 747-400, engage the Automatic Landing System (ALS). If it is not a 747-400, see below under "Landing Without ALS."

Can a Metallica album be too loud? The very thought might seem heretical to fans of the legendary metal band, which has been splitting eardrums with unrivaled power since the early 1980s.

But even though Metallica's ninth studio release, "Death Magnetic," is No. 1 on the album chart, with 827,000 copies sold in two weeks, some fans are bitterly disappointed: not by the songs or the performance, but the volume. It's so loud, they say, you can't hear the details of the music.

Q: How do you know your favorite band is washed up?
A: There's an article about them in the Wall Street Journal.

Coincidentally, I turned 33 today. I also think Death Magnetic is too loud.
