Mr. President, when the President of the United States breaks the law, he must be held accountable. That is why today I am introducing a resolution to censure President George W. Bush. The President authorized an illegal program to spy on American citizens on American soil, and then misled Congress and the public about the existence and legality of that program. It is up to this body to reaffirm the rule of law by condemning the President’s actions. All of us in this body took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and bear true allegiance to the same. Fulfilling that oath requires us to speak clearly and forcefully when the President violates the law. This resolution allows us to send a clear message that the President’s conduct was wrong. And we must do that. The President’s actions demand a formal judgment from Congress.

Just getting the @#$%ing morons in Congress to do anything at all besides licking up Bush & Co's lies sure would be nice, even if it is purely symbolic. Plus, we get to throw some hurt down on the people who have been propping up Bush. Like the 29 senate "Democrats" who voted for the invasion of Iraq. (Fortunately, no senator yet has voted to allow Bush the power to illegally wiretap without the permission of the FISA courts. Though some Republican senators have proposed a bill that would make it explicitly legal.)

The more I watch of this (very good) speech and maneuver, the more I realize that its audience is other Democrats moreso than Bush, Frist, or the usual suspects. This is all about calling on Congressional Dems to decide whether they're for the rule of law and standing up to incompetence and fear-mongering, or whether Dems are going to offer yet another "stay the course" candidate in 2008.

This is going to hurt Clinton, Biden, and Kerry more than anyone else. Because it illustrates how spineless they've been since 9/11. Good.

(I mean, what's not to like? Most of what Feingold is doing is quoting Bush himself, along with Gonzales. Well done.)

Nobody in Congress will have an excuse after this. You either voted to tell Bush that shredding the constitution is wrong, or you had the chance but decided against it.

If you have a minute today or tomorrow, call Ken Salazar and explain to him why you support censuring Bush for his illegal wire-tapping. I'd like to see him vote the right way on this one. And call Wayne Allard and do the same, even if it won't do any good.
