A brainwashed human slave inspects the UNBLINKING EYE OF PAIN, which will be used by our future robot masters to cast fire and agony down upon our weak, feeble flesh. Mounted on a 747, the UNBLINKING EYE OF PAIN is a chemically pumped megawatt class laser capable of melting steel in milliseconds, and a human face in much less.

All hail the new metal race! Death to the puny fleshlings! Victory to the machines!!

technicality... it actually takes more directed energy to fry a face than a piece of plate steel.

It was a silly post, of course, intended as a joke. But now you've got me wondering...

http://www.kernlasers.com/metal_cutting.htm says that CO2 lasers from 100-400 watts are used to cut metal, and these lasers are also focused down to a very small area by a lens.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11360423&dopt=Abstract says that a much more diffuse 17 J/cm2 @ 70 watts is enough to blast epidermis off for laser skin rejuvination treatments.

Metal is also laser-reflective. In fact it's difficult to cut aluminium with a laser cutter because of this. Skin is about 70% water and the rest mostly collagen, and absorbs laser energy pretty well.

Though I'm not about to try it, I suspect if I put my hand under an industrial laser cutter, it'd burn though much faster than a similiar thickness of steel.
