This "Smart Laser-Scanner for 3D Human-Machine Interface" is capable of tracking fingers in three-dimensions and in real-time. It was developed by A. Cassinelli, S. Perrin, and M. Ishikawa from the Ishikawa-Namika Lab (University of Tokyo). Video demonstration after the jump.

Okay, that's just awesome. I assume they'd want to make it an IR laser/camera combo just for sanity reasons, but very neat none the less.

I think it'd actually be useful to have it visible. That way you can tell if it found your finger or not during the acquire stage. Probably want to make it a blue laser though, that red is just harsh.
