Public

President Bush was in the midst of explaining how the attacks of 9/11 inspired his "freedom agenda" and the attacks on Iraq until a reporter, Ken Herman of Cox News, interrupted to ask what Iraq had to do with 9/11. "Nothing," Bush answered.

In keeping with his long history of admitting the blazingly obvious two years too late, I expect Bush will declare the War On Terrah! a failure, and the invasion of Iraq a complete scam, just as he leaves office.

The funny part is that I don't think he really meant to admit it/say that. He's just so unprepared to speak publically anymore that he winds up standing there grinning and babbling.

Someone did a thing recently showing bush speaking 10 years ago, and he was remarkably coherent, on topic, and had reasonbly well-organized presentation-- at least compared with today's standards.

Then they show him bumbling through speech after debate after press conference today, and make the point that he's got every symptom of... let's see if I can remember.... pre-senility dementia. or something to that effect.

Interestingly, this is what my (medical doctor) husband has been suggesting for a few years now.

Always tough to know how much of W's public speaking skills came from his dad (who was quite the on-camera bungler too) and how much are from too much booze and possibly some coke.

And again, look at him (GWB) earlier in his career... he did a hundred times better. This is clearly a more recent development.

On the other hand...

...it would be interesting to correlate his speaking ability with his popularity.

These days he probably feels behind the 8-ball; conservatives hate him, liberals fucking hate him, his choices have proven disasterous for the country, his policies have pissed off the world... maybe he's simply lost the brash, charismatic confidence that put him in the oval office in the first place, and with it, his ability to speak clearly/resolutely in public.

"We should show them... our resolve. [something] crusade [something else]" -- I think, first Bush speech after 9/11 attacks.

So maybe 10 years ago he was better, but 5 years ago he definitely had his current problem. And that was the time when he had plenty of public support, story about "My Pet Goat" reading wasn't released yet.

I think, he is sufficiently insulated from reality to remain an arrogant asshole regardless of consequences of his decisions or his popularity, he became dumb and overconfident before he got elected for the first term. Quite possibly, he was chosen as a candidate _because_ he was already dumb and overconfident -- in contrast to Clinton who preceded him and Gore (and later Kerry) who ran against him.

Hehe, that exact clip was used in Jon Stewart's Daily Show a few days ago. It was priceless.
