Will Phase Three in Iraq end with helicopters flying out of the "green zone" in Baghdad? It all sounds so familiar.

The difference lies in the consequences. Vietnam did not have the devastating effects on U.S. power that Iraq is already having. On this point, those who deny the Vietnam-Iraq analogy are probably right. They are wrong, however, in believing that "staying the course" will have any result other than making the damage to U.S. power far greater than changing course and withdrawing sooner in as orderly a fashion as possible.

The author of these words is not some hippy or liberal... he is Lieutenant General William E. Odom, U.S. Army (Ret.). He was Director of the National Security Agency from 1985 to 1988.

But that's okay - we all know that some random guy from Texas who never went to Vietnam is much better at knowing the ins and outs of war than a General who saw Vietnam firsthand and was also the Director of the NSA.

Pllllenty more about the situation in Iraq here: http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/54977

Assuming you're talking about Lieberman, he's part of the problem. Him and Hillary co-sponsored this pathetic piece of crap.

I believe he's referring to the Shrub, as he is originally from Connecticut, not Texas. Something a great many people seem to be ignorant of.

Dubya is technically from Connecticut, but he moved to Texas when he was 2.

I call myself a Coloradan, even though I was born in Austin and moved here when I was 9 months old.

I'm not faulting anybody, just pointing out a technicality.

If one were to qualify the question "where are you from?" by having it mean "where has the majority of your life been spent?", then I'm from New Jersey; though I was born in Vermont and have spent a good deal of time in both PA and now NC.

And I would tend to agree with you that Bush is from Texas, given his ranch in Crawford, and the fact that everything is big in Texas, even the gap between reality and the fiction in which Dubya lives.
