So, it's about 8:25am on a Sunday and I'm already here at Radio Shack. I'm both opening and closing today, meaning I had to get up at 7:30am and I won't be home until 7:30pm. And we're open shorter hours than normal today, because it's a Sunday. So really, beside the fact that my manager is very cool (and man am I thankful for that...) this is still a pretty typical retail hell job. And as I was opening up shop, I had a real Dante from Clerks moment. I had just finished turning on the lights, emptying the trash, and rotating the backup tape in the back. And having finished my tasks, I was faced with the realization that I had essentially nothing to do for the next 8 hours except sit on my ass. And maybe, if I was lucky, a customer would come in and break the boredom.
You know that shot in Clerks, where Dante has the same realization? He's just checked the register and started the coffe machine. Flips the front door sign over from "closed" to "open". Then he goes back behind the counter, sits down, and starts waiting. About two seconds later, he rolls his eyes in disgust and then thunks his head down on the counter.
That was me this morning. Ah, retail hell... how I love thee. ;]
(Since I started this post, we've had about five customers through, one guy looking for a job application, my cow-orker for the day came in, and the music is now KMFDM - Stray Bullet. So I guess life ain't all bad...)
