I'm thinking about trashing my 98SE partition and installing XP Pro. My machine is old - 833 MHz, 512 MB ram. I always thought it was way too underpowered for XP, but when I went and looked recently it appears that if you're not a gamer, that kind of machine may be enough.

What do you guys think?

Depends, of course, on what you want to do. My beater machine is a P-III 667MHz w/ 256MB, and it's tolerable for IM, notepad, etc. When it was Erin's machine, she loaded it up with all manner of stupid crap and it crashed every few hours.

It should work fine, even better if you turn the animation features of explorer.

Yeah, I was definitely planning to default back to "old style" window dressing, to keep the CPU and memory usage down.

All I want it for is to web surf, really. It's plenty good for that. And I'd keep the 98SE, except now I can't play my favorite flash games because there's no Flash 9 for 98SE.

May I point out that there are other systems that would run on it just fine? And there is Flash 9 for them.

I think the most people with sub 1 ghz. machines only kill their speed running a virus scanner.

Possibly of interest if you want a lighter weight XP:

http://www.nliteos.com/
http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html

(Disclaimer: Haven't tried them.)

It's been my experience that 512 is the baseline for 'decent' XP performance, 256 is a bit pokey, but 512 (or 384, iirc) were decent. (I'm thinking of the old crappy little silver Gateway notebook I had way back when.)

two words:
Craig's List

just get a *newer* used computer from some college student, they cycle through those things like toilet paper.

Every semester people are trashing theirs off their balconies because they don't think anyone will buy 'em.

YOU could be a lucky winner.
