In this entry of jwz's, the evil clown baconmonkey posted a link to a fiction story written by Marshall Brain - the guy who runs http://www.howstuffworks.com .

The story is about the collapse of modern Corporatism and an alternative socio-politico-economic system arising in its place. It's a very interesting read, and I highly recommend it. I don't think it's necessarily terribly realistic in all details. One has to wonder, near the end of the story, how it's possible that nobody has abused the system and taken over completely - flimsy appeals to robots referees and the innate intelligence of man in the story nonwithstanding.

On an almost completely unrelated note, I thought that this comment of mine in the same journal entry was a good summary of the potential and problems with biometrics. I do think biometrics are worth using so long as they're used in conjunction with something that truly is a secret piece of info known only to the authorized user. Used that way, biometrics can be a truly good thing for security. Used without that, they'd be a completely insecure disaster...

My cell phone is dead for the next day or two due to my address forward not working very well - I haven't seen a bill and it looks like one got lost, so they shut off my phone until I can pay them.

IRC might be better. Come to irc.jb.org, channel #jb and find me. I'll be there until about Midnight.
